The call

What Happens When You Call at 3am

The phone rings through to Tommy, who owns the business and carries out the work. There is no answering service, no dispatcher and no queue. Most night calls are answered inside a few rings, because the phone sits next to the bed.

1
You describe the door

Type of door, type of lock, whether the key is present, lost or snapped.

2
You are given a price

A figure for that job at that hour, before anyone sets off. It does not move.

3
You are told a time

An honest arrival window based on where the van is at that moment.

4
The door is opened

Payment by card or cash on completion. A receipt is issued for every job.

If the job is something better done in daylight, you will be told that on the phone rather than after a call-out. A door that is secure and a resident who is safe indoors can usually wait until morning, and waiting is cheaper.

Night pricing

What a Night Call-Out Costs

Most locksmith websites will not put a night figure in writing. These are the numbers you will be quoted, and the figure agreed on the phone is the figure on the receipt.

Lockouts After Midnight

A standard overnight lockout on a UPVC or timber door, opened without damage, is quoted from £65. A daytime lockout on the same door is quoted from £45. The difference is the hour, and it is the whole difference — nothing else is added on top.

Lock Changes and Repairs Through the Night

A replacement euro cylinder fitted overnight is quoted from £55, and an anti-snap cylinder to the three-star standard from £75. A failed multipoint mechanism that leaves a door insecure is quoted from £95 once the fault is identified. Where a part is not on the van, the door is made secure that night and the part is fitted the next day at no second call-out charge.

What Is Never Added to the Bill

  • No call-out fee, at any hour of any day
  • No VAT, because the business is not VAT registered
  • No weekend rate and no bank holiday rate
  • No charge if the door cannot be opened
  • No mileage charge anywhere inside the coverage area

Every figure above is a starting price for that job on a standard domestic door. Unusual locks, reinforced doors and commercial premises are quoted individually, on the phone, before anyone travels.

Night work

The Jobs Cobra Attends Through the Night

Four jobs account for almost every call taken between eleven at night and five in the morning.

🚪

Locked Out of the House

Door pulled shut on the latch, keys inside or lost on a night out. In almost every case the lock is picked open and keeps working afterwards, so there is nothing further to pay.

🔑

Key Snapped in the Lock

Half the key in your hand, half in the cylinder. The broken section is extracted and, where the cylinder is undamaged, the same lock is kept and a new key cut to it.

🔓

Door Will Not Lock and the Property Is Open

A handle that lifts but will not throw the bolts leaves a property standing open overnight. This is treated as urgent at any hour, because the door cannot be left.

🛡

After a Break-In

A forced door is made secure the same night, photographs are taken for the insurer, and a written record of the work is provided before leaving.

Method

Locks Opened Without Damage at Night

Drilling a lock at two in the morning turns a call-out into a lock replacement, and it is the reason night call-outs have a reputation for costing far more than they should. Picking is always tried first. On a standard domestic cylinder it succeeds the overwhelming majority of the time, the lock keeps working, and the bill stops at the opening charge. Where a cylinder has already been snapped or the mechanism has failed outright, destructive entry becomes the only route, and you are told that on the doorstep with the cost of the replacement before anything is touched. The full method is set out on the non-destructive entry page.

Who you reach

Who Answers the Phone at Night

A number advertised as twenty-four hours is not always a locksmith who is awake. Many are routed to a national booking line that takes the job, adds a margin and then looks for somebody local who is willing to travel. That is where the long waits and the moving prices come from, and it is why a caller can be quoted one figure on the phone and handed another at the door.

Cobra is one locksmith with one phone. Tommy answers it, quotes the job, drives to it and carries out the work. Nothing is passed on to a third party and no margin is added by anybody in between. That is also why the price given at three in the morning is the price on the receipt.

  • City and Guilds qualified and NCFE certified

Overnight coverage

Areas Covered Through the Night

Overnight cover runs across every Liverpool postcode and out into the wider Merseyside and Cheshire area. Arrival times are longest at the outer edge of the map and shortest in the centre, and you are given the honest figure for your address when you call.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you really answer the phone at 3am?

Yes. The phone is answered by Tommy, who owns the business and carries out the work, and it sits beside the bed overnight. On the rare occasion a call is missed because another job is already in progress, it is returned within a few minutes.

Is there a call-out fee at night?

No. There is no call-out fee at any hour, on any day of the year. You pay for the work itself and nothing for attending. If the door cannot be opened, there is nothing to pay.

How quickly can you reach me after midnight?

Twenty to forty minutes is typical across central Liverpool, and roads are clearer at night than during the day. Outer areas take longer. You are given an honest arrival window for your address on the phone rather than an advertised average.

Will my lock be damaged?

In almost every case, no. Picking is tried first and on a standard domestic cylinder it succeeds the overwhelming majority of the time, which means the lock keeps working and there is nothing further to pay. Where a cylinder has already been snapped or has failed, you are told before anything is touched.

Which areas do you cover overnight?

Every Liverpool postcode, along with St Helens, Widnes, Runcorn, Warrington and the wider Cheshire area. Cover is the same at four in the morning as it is at midday.

Do you charge more on bank holidays?

No. There is no weekend rate and no bank holiday rate. The only price difference is between daytime and overnight, and that difference is stated on this page.

Locked out right now?

The phone is answered at any hour. You will be given a price before anyone sets off.
